I was interested in purchasing a 2003 Mercedes SL 550 but knew it needed work. I live south of Boston so I was looking in the area around Salem for a good mechanic who could give me an estimate on the repairs the car was going to need. I sent an inquiry e-mail this morning and waited to hear from Duncan’s.
Ben Duncan called me back mid afternoon and after a few minutes of talking with him, not only was his expertise clear but so was the decision not to buy this particular car. Ben went over all the most likely trouble spots, which of course were most of the issues the Seller was saying needed addressed and told me it was probably not worth all the repairs and that I was better buying one in good running condition. He also informed me of a recall on a Mercedes I already own that I was unaware of. I thanked him and apologized that he was so far away from where I live as I couldn’t realistically bring my cars to him. Not only was he gracious in his understanding but he then offered me the name of a shop much nearer to my home that he recommends.
Ben could have easily told me to buy the car and have run up a $5000 plus repair bill but he was honest and steered me clear. I really appreciate his honesty in such a crazy world. I didn’t end up using Duncan’s, though I really wish I could, but I am more than happy to share my experience.
